Our shop is located in a small town in the valley between Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains. Vermont Green Cabinets is a group of environmentally responsible designers and builders of custom cabinetry for homes and businesses. In 2006 we decided that the conventional way of making cabinets wasn't working for us anymore. To much waste, toxicity and transport and not enough accountability. We saw the opportunity for creating a new business model that would generate practical, responsible, methods for providing environmentally sound cabinetry and millwork. At VGC we believe that GREEN MEANS LOCAL. Today the kitchen cabinet may travel over 3000 miles before it is installed in your kitchen. Two generations ago this would have been considered extravagant and wasteful. We agree.
Finishes we use:
Standard wood finishes are toxic, and ordinary cabinets continue to off-gas carcinogenic vapors for months after they’ve been installed. We prefer to keep our products local and lose the poisons. For a lustrous, durable finish, we use Vermont Natural Coatings (vermontnaturalcoatings.com), a water-borne product developed and manufactured right here in Vermont.
Hardwoods we use:
We think Vermont hardwood is the finest available anywhere and are very fortunate to have an abundant supply of responsibly harvested hardwoods close by. Our wood comes from carefully managed, local woodlots with chain-of-custody documentation. It is then rough-milled in a neighboring town and hand selected for use in our cabinetry.
Plywoods we use:
Conventional plywood is fabricated with glues containing carcinogenic formaldehyde, so we don’t use it. We use only Fromaldahyde free plywoods. We are proud members of the Forest Stewardship Council (fsc.org) and are able to offer Chain of custody FSC certified documentation for our hardwoods and plywoods.
We are concerned about our air, water and soil, so we recycle and we use recycled products. We heat our shop with recyclable and after-market fuels. And we offer employee incentives for walking, biking, carpooling to work. We are constantly assessing and implementing initiatives to assist us in achieving our goal of carbon neutrality.
We like to think we’re helping to keep the Green Mountains…..green.
